Hi, Susan,

Have you considered shingles?  It commonly affects the thoracic nerves, can
sometimes occur without lesions and can leave postherpetic neuralgia which
is quite painful.  It would be too late for antivirals and steroids but
anti-inflammatory drugs may help.  Google Zoster sine herpete.
