When breastfeeding stops before the mother planned to or wanted it to, who -
or *what* - failed? No surprise that Diane W. is piping up here, since we
can thank her for harping on the distinction between guilt and regret, and
for generally getting us to watch our language.

Breastfeeding failed. A mother experienced a breastfeeding failure, or
experienced failed breastfeeding. Why did it fail? Often because the
support failed to materialize, or at least failed to be in the right place
at the right time. Or the baby failed to do its part, and no one knew how
to deal with it. Or, the baby was prevented from doing its part due to a
failure on the part of the surroundings, to enable breastfeeding to happen.

The mother seldom fails. It happens, but in my experience this is not the
prime cause of breastfeeding failure.
