In reference to the research on SIDS and daycare, I have been particularly
struck by the fact that a high percentage of these SIDS deaths occur during
the baby's first few days in daycare. The researchers suggest that a baby
who is used to sleeping on his back is at more risk when first put down on
his stomach, but I wonder if the real culprit is the stress those babies
might be feeling at the change from being at home with Mom to being in a
daycare centre. I remember the study done a couple of years ago (I think it
was from Harvard?) that showed high levels of stress hormones (cortisol?) in
babies at daycare, and I really wonder if this could be a factor.
