The limiting of visitors is truly one of my soapboxes too...I talk about
the importance of this when parents come to me prenatally and
interview/meet me.
It is amazing how I find that patients sometimes thank me later for pushing
this because they were feeling overwhelmed. This also extends into the
first month, where often the father may want to travel since mom is 'off'
on maternity leave. Sometimes the dad will want to leave the baby for a few
days and take a vacation with mom, or he will want to go visit relatives
with mom and baby. I think showing my concern about these social issues
opens the door to phone calls from moms, who ask me 'can you just tell him
that I can't go...I am so tired and I am afraid that breastfeeding may not
go well if we go'. Of course first I ask if its the in-laws they are going
to visit...Anne Eglash
