Slightly off topic, but related:
Heard a discussion on a local talk radio show about people who
choose not to become parents complaining about all the "extra
benefits" that working parents get. Among these are supposedly
1-being able to get off ofr a child's school play, soccer game,
graduation, etc. 2-being able to stay home with a sick child,
3-maternity/family leave, etc.
My response is: If you choose not to have children, more power to
you. Then those that do want children can have more than 2 without
feeling they are adding to a population problem. However, don't
talk as though everyone should make that choice. Don't put down
those who do chose to be parents. You, also, benefit from others
raising children. If everyone (or even a large portion of the
population) chose to remain childless (or as one caller preferred,
child-free), who would be there to take care of you in your old
age? Whether you need caregivers, tour guides, retirement financial
planners, resort staff, or nursing home care, these are the children
being raised today! In the end, everyone benefits when children are
raised to become productive members of society.
Just my dime's worth. Thanks for letting me vent.
Winnie
