It's almost impossible not to think about possible scenarios with this
current situation. As an earlier poster stated, it would be helpful for
us to have information readily available if we should need it rather
than be frantically looking it up if/when a crisis occurs. In thinking
about how this might affect our work, several questions come to mind. I
am glad that the question of whether a mom has to worry about passing it
on to her baby if she has been vaccinated or otherwise potentially
exposed has ben addressed. However there are several others that come
to mind.
1. If a mom has been exposed, does she pass the antibodies to her baby
while nursing as with things like a cold or the flu?
2. The primary antibiotic used is Cipro which is of concern for use
while breastfeeding (L4 per Hale). If a nursing mom is exposed to
anthrax, are there alternate antibiotics which can give her similar
protection? If not, how much less effective would alternate antibiotics
be?
3. What is given to babies/children who have been exposed? What is the
18 month old we heard about in the news getting?
4. In the event an LC were to be exposed, what extra precautions should
she (he) take in contacts with babies? Is Cipro enough? Is regular
laundering of any clothes that might have been contaminated sufficient?
Again, not the sort of thing we like to think about, but it would be
good to have this info just in case.
Incidentally, OT, but how many cases of anthrax or anthrax exposure are
"normal"? In other words, before 9/11 how many cases would occur in an
average year?
Does anyone have answers to any of the above questions? Are there other
questions we should be asking?
