Henci Goer tells this story in her excellent book "Obstetric Myths and
Research Realities":

<<Penny Simkin, well-known educator, writer, speaker and editor was called
on the carpet by an anesthesiologist, irate that she had written a handout
listing the potential tradeoffs of epidural when she was not a doctor
(although he did not dispute her accuracy). "What are your credentials?" he
demanded. "I can read," was Penny's reply.>>

Henci's second book "A Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth" is also
superb. I have no financial investment in these books.

The more original research I read, the more I'm able to spot flaws in the
methodology or definitions or some other aspect of the study. Please DO
start reading the originals. Most people get better at critiquing research
with practice.
