Joy writes in part: "The scenario is frequently a mother who has been
successfully breastfeeding for a couple of months and then the baby starts
refusing the breast - even pushing the breast away and not attempting to
attach.... this without the mother reporting sore breasts and the baby
otherwise well...I have had several mothers quit breastfeeding after
becoming fustrated from the effort required just to attach the fighting
baby so often. "
Dear Joy - My son and I suffered through this problem 15 years ago and I have
since counseled many moms relating to this. You are right. It is a fairly
frequent occurrence at two to three months of age. The La Leche League
pamphlet on How to Handle a Nursing Strike should be consulted for many good
ideas. It is often a guessing game to determine what is causing this
fussiness and there can be many possible causes. In my experience these
babies often are gassy and hard to burp. I think they come to associate
nursing with pain. I think exploring a foremilk-hindmilk imbalance is
worthwhile. Sometimes restricting a feeding to one breast can help. In the
meantime, nurse when the child is sleepy. I used to rock my son to sleep and
then slip in the breast or catch him just before he woke up. He nursed
better during the night. We did get through this difficult period (although
I wish I had known then what I know now) and went on to have a wonderful
nursing relationship. Read the LLL pamphlet for other suggestions.
