Thanks for all the great input from everyone. I talked with mom this AM to let her know you are all mostly in favor of her continuing to nurse and to ask her some of your questions. Here is the updated history:

My mistake about the calcium deficiency. This patient never had that problem. ( I confused her with another patient on that account.) However she was born with an in turned foot and legs and her parents were told she would never walk. She eventually did walk with extreme difficulty until things became gradually better at about age 13.

Her normal weight is 98-100 pounds. Height is 5'3". She has never met with an RD or had a diagnosis of rickets or celiac disease. She did state that she was on amitryptiline for 3 years and had severe constipation and even an obstruction as a result of that drug. She does not notice any side effects from the muscle relaxer she takes once or twice a day.

She is interested to hear more about Hellerwork and will talk to her Doc about a blood draw for celiac dx. Incidentally, I had a similar response from this family practice Doc a year ago when he told another patient to wean for no apparent reason. I did call him after that encounter and tried to educate him. He was polite enough on the phone but my words obviously were falling on deaf ears.

Long story short, mom said she had a horrible "empty feeling" inside when he told her to quit nursing, and she is relieved to hear that we support her continuing to nurse and weaning gradually when she and her daughter are more ready for it.
