I have been asked by the Mgr. of Peds to explain why we do not require frozen
milk to be stored in biohazard bags (after being collected in milk storage
bags from a pump co.). I found several citations refuting the fact that breast
milk is not a "potentially infectious medical substance". But she is concerned
about exposure to staff members of any hazardous materials. I keep trying to
explain that HIV infected moms are advised not to breastfeed (I decided to
stop fighting this fight) but she is concerned about those not aware of their
status. I know we have been over this, but my boss asked me to post this
inquiry to ask others what they do at their worksite. I should add that our
hospital is  a large, inner city institution with a very mixed population.
