In South Africa, drug companies may not give doctors substantial gifts.  So 
now they concentrate even more on building a close personal relationship 
with the doctor.  These days I see gifts of small inexpensive personal 
items: things like little boxes of candy, and a vase with a single rose in 
it, attached a note that would have been appropriate from a lover....

Marketing is very manipulative and clever.

The drug companies ply doctors with a wide range of gifts,
 The companies also pay
large sums to doctors for consulting or for conducting research.
Although medical societies and the industry's trade association have adopted
voluntary guidelines that are supposed to limit payments and gifts to modest
proportions, they typically still allow doctors to be paid as consultants or
speakers,
