There was a study at the 2005 ILCA conference about suck strength and
nipple soreness. Both too much suction and too little produced soreness.
Will look for it tomorrow. Brain dead right now.

Subject: Re: Nipple shields

I have just started to wonder about the strength of a baby's suck playing a
role in nipple soreness. I am also working with a woman who we believe might
have a yeast infection, tx with Diflucan, infant with Nystatin and
persistent pain, both external and radiating internally. She also had
noticed the four dots where her nipple was extruded through the shield, and
promptly threw her shields away. (No significant changes after throwing out
the shields). But it set me wondering whether the intensity of the suck even
with a perfect latch might be damaging. like setting the vacuum to high on a
breast pump. Does anyone know if this has been studied?
