Rape is a violent crime. I am dismayed at the cavalier use of the term
"nipple rape."

Dear Colleagues:
Rape is a violent act. The mother I worked with wept in telling the
story, felt violated and came up with the term herself. In no way, shape,
or form, is this a cavalier attitude. It is deadly serious. Rape is an
assault to parts of our bodies that we use in intimate ways, as in breastfeeding
or sexual activity. No one should have to receive or endure this violence.
We need to ask permission to touch a woman's breasts. We need to ask
permission to touch her baby. We can use our skills and talents to create a loving
and supportive environment so that mother and baby can connect with each
other.
Violence, as manifested in breast bruising, babies aversive to the
breast, and mothers weeping at home at the memory, has no place in birth or
in breastfeeding.
One style of rape in no way diminishes the terrible impact of another style
of rape.
warmly,
