Pam, that was a beautiful story. Your friend is very fortunate to have you
there with her.
Regarding the nurses don't have time to help mothers breastfeed I want to add
a few observations.
There are babies and circumstances when breastfeeding is very challenging but
for the most part it is not. What everyone hears is that breastfeeding is
hard, time consuming to do and help with, and hurts. With this message sent out
in literature, classes and word of mouth of course nurses are going to shy
away from even getting involved during their busy shift.
I would like to get the word out that breastfeeding is the easiest way to
feed a baby and so enjoyable. The nurses main role is to help mothers with
comfortable positioning and give feedback on the nursing. If newborns were left
skin-to-skin with their mothers in the early hours there would be more success
stories.
More education of the public and health professionals would be a start. I
don't think they need to hear about the difficult cases but to feel comfortable
with the basics.
