http://IBLCE.org can tell you the requirements needed.
Take lots of classes and courses and go to conferences. Get "Breastfeeding
and Human Lactation" by Jan Riordan and Kathleen Auerbach (The Brown Bible
or The Breastfeeding Bible as referred to by many)it has so much information
and also tells you how to prepare for becoming an LC and taking the exam.
Ruth Lawrence's "Breastfeeding: A Guide for the Medical Profession" will be
needed in your library also. And "Counseling the Nursing Mother: A
Lactation Consultants Guide" by Judith Lauwers and Debbie Shinskie is a
wonderful resource, also. Lawrence Gartner,Jack Newman, Kay Hoover,
B.Wilson-Clay,, Linda Smith, Nancy Wight, Tom Hale.(Forgive me for not
naming everyone, their are so many wonderful authors, teachers and
researchers that I have not mentioned.)
And, of course your many resources in LLL.(The Breastfeeding Answer Book,
Womanly Art, ETC.)

And, very important, get documented hours of helping mothers and baby's in
different settings. (My problem, as an at home mom, the mothers I help I
can't document because, it is in a 'lay setting', I think that is how people
refer to it. If I am wrong about this and someone knows how to 'count' my
work let me know.) The only hours I have documented, so far, are the classes
I voluntarily give at our pregnancy center. Maybe in another year or two
(when both boys are in school) I can get some kind of work at WIC or the
hospital to document my hours.)

Hope this gives you some help.

Cheryl Marian, CLC, CLE (5-1/2 year LLL member, too.)
