Georgeanne and All,
In 1981, in a rational effort to decide if our family would do well
with a third child, we took on Foster care with the stipulation that we
would prefer a baby. Our one and only placement was a set of 5 month-old
twins, who were severely neglected and recovering from several illnesses
but not battered. We had them for just under 2 months. I had a great
time, we found that in deed a third child was workable and comfortable
for our family, the kids loved the girls and I was able to over come
some of the neglect (they still had tonic neck reflex from being left in
a dark room most of the day). It was not hard to return the babies, even
emotionally and through an error in scheduling I was able to talk to the
mother, no one had assisted her or even put her in touch with a mother
of twins to help support her. Her questions were basic, common sense
stuff - it broke my heart. I found out who my friends were while I had
the girls and the experience of formula feeding them convinced me that I
would not formula feed a child of mine. I heartedly recommend it and I
am even considering doing it again, since I am not able to find local
employment.
