  R. Lawrence discusses HTLV I in her book... page 511. she says that "the
authors concluded w that HTLV-I infectoions from mother to infant occur
mainly via breasmilk and not the placenta or during birth"

   You can call the lactation center and ask her staff if there has been a
change since the article in 1987.

    It might be worth pulling the article yourelf and see what it says....

     I will ask the infectious disease specialist that I know and let you
know what I find out...
