One thing that speaks to the possiblity of hormonal influences contributing
to sore nipples is that many women nursing during a pregnancy find their
nipples become quite sore.  If it was just toughening up or learning to
latch correctly, then why would it start hurting with the toddler who'd been
nursing for many months pain-free? And those who tandem-nurse often have
painful nipples for the first week or so post-partum...
Also, I recall some speaker using a penile analogy for nipples, in that one
wants these organs to remain exquisitely sensitive in order to do their
jobs. Building a callous doesn't seem to work in that analogy.
