Rachel makes some great points about the issue.  I would add one more
confounding factor.  The initial weight is not the most reiable starting point.
Some babies "pee and poop" before the weight is taken and some do it after the
weight.  The ones who empty themselves after the first weight would probably
show a greater difference the next weight check than the ones who are weighed
before they "empty".  Yet, I have never seen this taken into account when
considering whether baby has "lost too much".  I personally would like to see
the initial weight be taken closer to 24 hours of age.  However, for most
families, "What does baby weigh?" comes right after "Boy or girl?" (in those
rare cases today when they don't know the gender before birth).  Add to that the
fact that (at least where I worked) one must be able to enter a weight as part
of the admission data before a chart can be generated!  Like so many other ways
we mess things up, policy and procedure trump biology.  I think it was Linda
Smith who came up with the slogan, "It's easier to change policy than biology".
If only we could convince the policy makers of that!
