I do think it is important to talk about difficulties that might be
encountered. I've heard women say they knew the first weeks might be
difficult so they persevered.

I sort of talk about labor/birth can be "easy" and fast or it may be more
difficult, long, and more painful. We hear all sides of the birth story
coin.

The same can be said for lactation - some first days of lactation go
smoothly and others are very difficult.

I think it is wise to tell women that some babies don't latch - they need a
plan B for expressing and feeding in the first hours/days if so. Also, even
if the latch "looks perfect" the feeding may be painful and the nipple
might get injured. It happens all the time.

Let them know to reach out for help in hospital or birthcenter or to their
support people.
