Birth by Design, like all GFI's materials, is rotten to the core. It will
be
interesting to see what has changed since the 1999 edition. Frequently
what you will see with GFI's lesser known works are older mandates that have
not been updated, unlike the ever-morphing Babywise. So, for example (out
of many in this book alone), the recommended treatment for engorgement in
the 1996 2nd printing edition of Birth by Design is "It may be necessary to
nurse the baby more frequently (every three hours until engorgement passes."
Note that MORE frequently is defined as 3 hours! This dates back to when
the schedule was every four hours. BBD was not revised to my knowledge
until the 1999 edition, which means that readers, for 3 years, were getting
the OLD Babywise/Prep information.

This, of course is an ongoing problem we see with old copies of BW/Prep
being passed around among friends. I always comment that it must be scant
comfort for mothers who lost their supply or whose babies FTT on early
BW/Prep to learn that God changed His mind somewhere along the way and it is
now 'biblical' to feed every three hours vs. the four they were programmed
to do!

FWIW, clients should know that two of the authors on previous editions,
Diane Dirks, CNM and Sharon Nelson, MD, are no longer affiliated with GFI
and apparently no longer support their teachings. Sharon Nelson was on
their 'medical board,' too.
