I have checked the archives without success and am wondering if anyone knows of any research on ionozone treatment of sore nipples provided by our physiotherapy unit at local hospital (which is also the specialist burns unit for the whole country) They have been offering it for some time, 5-10 minutes a side for unresolved nipple soreness and some mothers swear by it.LLLL's have been a little sceptical as usually poor positioning has been a factor and it ahs been corrected around the same time. But my mother with that persistant crack tried it last week and raved about how more comfortable her nipple was at the end of it. Apparently it stimulates the circulation and healing process. Whatever it doesn't appear to do any harm and many mothers report that it was very soothing. Maybe an option for this mother with peristant thrush? My second question is one of those breastfeeding curiousity topics and relates to a personal experience I was reminded of by that wonderful story about the baby "getting it right" at 3 and a half months. My eldest son weaned at around 11and a half months when I was pregnant with his younger sister. When she was about thirteen months he asked to nurse while I was feeding her. Expecting that he would have forgotten how (he was 2years eight months) I let him try and ended up with two nursing toddlers. We think he was still able to nurse because he was a committed two middle finger sucker which tends to mean a flatter tongue, wider mouth than a thumb sucker. I guess I'm just a little curious if there are other instances out there of a child being weaned for over eighteen months and then nursing again. As for the cute story I had been messing with my milk supply by not bothering to pump when I've been working two or three long mornings a week the last few weeks unless I was really full. Jonathan (9months)has been quite happy with his solids and some water or very diluted juice. At some point he will have a couple of ozs of EBM or formula, but he usually waits for me. He's fully breastfed the days I'm home. However after a week where I had a been a bit later than usual he was creeping up to 4-6ozs those days .At the end of this particular day (I'd been home all day) he was obviously getting a bit frustrated at the breast, even with repeated switches there wasn't a lot of swallowing going on. When he began fussing for another drink less than an hour later I decided to try a few ozs of formula to take the edge of his hunger (and give me a rest, he has eight teeth-tugging with frustration is not fun) Anyway he kept spitting out the teat and nuzzling at me. My 15 year old daughter and 17 year old son watched with disgust and then David said "Why would he want that when he's got the real thing right there - it would be like having Coke at MacDonalds" According to him bottled Coke is the real thing, the post-mix version MacDonalds offers is a poor imitation. After I stopped laughing I did offer the real thing and there was milk and a sleeping contented baby. Out of the mouth of my big babe...Sonja LLLL Lower Hutt NZ
