First you might try this site
http://www.aapd.org/finddentist/search.asp
for american acad. ped. dentists
I typed in one of the zip codes for burlington and you can say how many
miles you will
travel, and many dentists came up. You would have to call them all and ask
re weaning.
Second, since you already have a bad feeling re this dentist, I would
definitely seek a
second opinion. The situation is not life-threatening and can take some time
to find the right one.
My kids nursed at night quite a lot, one of them to about 6 yrs, and I hate
to admit, did not
always have a perfect diet. In other words, they ate candy and junk at
times. Never had
cavities so I know it is not a sure thing re night nursing. I do think
someone told me to try
to get the child to release the breast and swallow, so as not to just keep
the breast in
her mouth and get a relatively constant drip of milk all night. In the
meantime, you can do all the
research you can (yes, some of it is conflicting) and try to modify as much
as you can the
things you can control. No sticky raisins, etc. Don't know what the dentist
painted on the
teeth but perhaps some sort of sealant that will help. Perhaps increase the
amount of plain
water the child will drink.
I do agree that weaning would probably do more harm, I think take a deep
breath and re-group.
It is hard not to feel guilty but you must believe that breastfeeding is
extremely good for the child, and
the mother-child relationship.
