When I started working at WIC several years ago as a peer
counsellor under Chris Mulford, I remember one of the
first
things she told me is that we have no evidence based
information to give to mothers who are doing both breast
and artificial feeding, a really large number in our
population.

I also found it amazing that there didn't seem to be
consistent counselling for the artificially feeding moms
on how much formula to be giving. I understand that
breastfeeding babies take differing amounts and all do
fine if there is no breastfeeding problem, but how are
moms who choose to feed ABM supposed to know how much to
feed. At WIC we see parents giving what seem like
enormous amounts to their young babies. It also is very
hard to get accurate reporting on what babies really are
taking and how much is wasted. I wonder if the
peds./nurses/nutritionists etc. are not teaching these
moms how to artificially feed because there is evidence
based information or if they just don't know follow it
just as we know many who don't give evidence based
information on breastfeeding that we strive so hard for.
