Ancedotally, I have heard of some mothers experiencing a drop in supply after getting the Mirena, just like the ancedotal stories about the supposedly "safe" mini-pill. (basically the same hormones.)

At the Birthing The World conference in Quebec city last fall, a pharmacist who is very knowledgeable about medications and breastfeeding suggested that moms who are considering getting the Mirena try a trial run of the Micronor BCP first and see how this affects them, since the hormones are similar. It can take time to get the IUD removed if problems develop, but they can easily just stop taking the pill.

Personally, I don't like the idea of either, especially before 6 months postpartum. I don't like taking any chances with supply when there are so many safer methods of birth control available that are really quite effective.

Have you checked with Hale's Infant Risk Center?
