Teresa et al,

I think you hit the nail on the head when you stated:

"And the risk factors for the babies were easily identified: dark skin,
mothers who were covered most of the time, usually for religious reasons."

In the concern not to appear to pick out any racial or religious group (good
old PC) the concern about Vitamin D has been slapped on all moms and babies.
The horror case that was presented to our affiliate was a black baby who was
born in the fall (i.e. kept inside most of the first months). This has been
the same with nearly all of the other stories I have heard about.

Isn't there some way babies can be monitored for Vit. D status if there is
any risk they might not be getting enough? Just because some wind up with a
metabolic deficiency shouldn't be reason enough to bombard everyone with
that substance "just in case".

At any rate, it isn't that breastmilk is "deficient" and formula is
"complete". Vitamin
D is certainly added to formula along with all the other things they add
(and keep adding) to formula trying to make it "closer to breastmilk". If
there is any deficiency, it is in our diet and/or environment as a whole,
not in the nutrition that is made for babies! If mothers are told to add
Vitamin D to their baby's intake, they should also be told that it is added
to formula at the factory, not that their milk specifically is "inadequate".

Winnie
