Dear Treesa, First of all, please talk to this IBCLC and ask her if the
reports are accurate. This is a good opportunity to foster communication and
rapport between the two of you. Be polite and kindly and say it in a non
offensive or judgemental way. Explaining that mothers report to you how when
they hear her words they feel discouraged about breastfeeding could be very
effective. Sometimes mothers hear what we say differently than we want them
to. Please be aware that there is truth to the statement that some 35-37
weekers need time before they can properly breastfeed. Getting a rental or
hospital quality breastpump and pumping enough times per 24 hours (8 times)
will help to establish the milk supply. Many twins are born by c-section in
my area and that means epidurals for 2-3 days afterwards and drugged,
unresponsive babies who often feed poorly for several weeks. Secondly, if
this IBCLC is truly giving incorrect information and doesn't change after
you speak with her, there is a complaint process through IBLCE and you can
find this on their web page. Look under Code of Ethics.
Kathy Eng, BSW, IBCLC
