Ellen,

The only time I have encountered this practice was with an Ezzo parent. The
baby was FTT, and the doctor (the only one in this area who supports
Babywise, to my knowledge), told the mother to do this exact same thing,
except I think she was doing the supplementation more frequently than 1 x a
day (in order to not bf more than 7 x in 24 hours).

I don't think that this is standard practice nor healthy for the baby in
terms of the renal solute load.

You might explore further with this mother to see if she is using Babywise,
Preparation for Parenting, or its newest incarnation, "Along the Infant
Way." There is a ton of information on this in the archives, and more info
at www.ezzo.info.

I found a 1989 study by Ziegler and Fomon, J Nutr. 1989 Dec;119(12
Suppl):1785-8. Potential renal solute load of infant formulas. I also found
a discussion of concentrating formulas at this website:
http://depts.washington.edu/growing/Nourish/Concform.htm

If this mother is not schedule feeding, it might be enlightening for her to
ask the PNP where she got this idea.

Best wishes,

>She was told by a nurse practitioner to supplement 1 time day with 2ounces
of ebm fortified with 1 scoop of powdered formula. Does anyone know if this
is ok?
