Some months ago Barbara questioned whether ultrasound treatment for the
breast was known to have any adverse effects on milk. I have finally been
able to get hold of a study that was done and reported at a conference but
not published, entitled:
Effects of therapeutic ultrasound on breastmilk composition: A single-case
experimental study, by Luscombe, D., Jones, S., Cox, D., and Hartmann, P (of
course!)
The study used pulsed therapeutic ultrasound at 0.5, 0.8 and 1.0 w/cm2
applied alternately to the right and left breasts of one lactating women
with no mastopathy. Only one dose on one side was given each week. Baseline
milk samples were taken and also at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 minutes post
rest or treatment.

Biochemical analysis of lactose, fat, sodium and potassium found no changes
occurred after ultrasound treatment.
