Susan,

It is my understanding that one is not supposed to fast while
breastfeeding.  That's the choice I made during Yom Kippur for the past 2
years.  No fasting if it will harm you.  Therefore, fasting is not
permitted when pregnant or nursing.   I know many women do no adhere to
this thought.  I'm sure a mom would be ok if she fasted, might lose some
milk supply.  But she might also become dehydrated and her blood sugar
level might really drop, especially if she has a young infant.
Did you also know that the Torah states women and to breastfeed for at
least 24 months?
