I have to chime in here on the lab values theme. Lab results for urine
samples are not reliable unless the baby is straight-cathed, meaning a catheter is
inserted into the bladder under sterile procedures and the urine is drawn and
sent to the lab. All other lab results are irrelevant and not considered
reliable based on possible contamination with the process that the urine sample
was obtained. Many samples of urine are sent to lab per urine bag which means
the collection bag is adhered to the baby's skin. This is considered a clean
catch and not as highly reliable as a straight-cath which is done under sterile
technique. For cost-containment purposes, many institutions obtain urine
samples under clean technique and repeat tests when and if there's a cause for
concern. Sorry if this has already been discussed as I've been somewhat
skimming my e-mails the past few days.
