Long time subscriber, first time posting. I work as a Lactation
Consultant for WIC. I have permission to post about a co-worker that is
a WIC Nutritionist/RD/LD. She believes her 8 month old baby has rare
allergy called "food protein induced enterocolitis syndrome". Here are
the basics:  DOB: 8/29/09; Birth wt: 10# 1 oz; Current wt: ~24 lbs;
exclusively breastfed.

Since introducing solids, he has not been able to tolerate any foods
other than fruits and vegetables. 2-3 hours after eating any food such
as rice cereal, oatmeal, chicken, egg yolks, etc, he starts vomiting
repeatedly until he becomes very lethargic and won't take anything by
mouth. Since he can't eat any foods with protein, his pediatrician has
become concerned that he is going to become protein deficient. He says
that breastfeeding and giving fruits and vegetables only will not
provide enough protein and can lead to multiple medical problems. He
said after 4-6 months breast milk becomes deficient in protein (as well
as some vitamins and minerals) and does not provide what babies need
anymore, so he said I need to introduce formula so that he can get
adequate protein.

We would appreciate your input on this case. Evidences based
information/studies to provide the pediatrician would also be
appreciated.

Thanks!
