Nikki,

Having been born in 1930 I have the vantage point of having watched my
grandmother and her lifelong relationships with her own children, and her
trying to keep my mother doing the "latest thing". I watched my mother
struggle with her instincts over what the culture (not only through my
grandmother, but the whole culture) was telling her with me as well as my
brothers and sisters. I feel certain there were thngs about her
experience as a woman and a mother that she regretted till the day she
died.

I can identify very closely with your post at the level of my
grandmother, my mom, my own mothering, my relationship with my daughters,
daughters-in-law and now my nieces and granddaughters, and the mothers I
have cared for, as well as with the changes I have seen during a half
century in the health care profession.

Bravo for saying it, and saying it so well!

Jean
