Dear Heather,

I agree with everybody that this would be a great topic for a European
history paper, since many of the events and actors were in Europe. However,
your daughter might also want to examine the global aspects of the story,
using it as an early example of economic globalisation. You've got Nestle, a
European-based multinational corporation, expanding their markets in Africa,
Latin America, and Asia, and activists in Europe and North America pointing
out the harm that this was causing. U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy held hearings;
U.S. churches joined the boycott; all this attention got the U.N. involved.
One conclusion might be that "European history" isn't just about Europe any
more. We were linked by trade and by advocacy decades before we were linked
by the internet.

Good luck to the student!

Chris

P.S. I apologize to all for getting the Lactnet commands mixed up. Thanks to
those who helped me. I think I've got it now.
