Thank-you for the information on this subject. I fully
understand the mechanics of both milk sensitivity and
lactose intollerance. I guess part of my problem comes when
the terms are tossed about loosly as they seem to be in L.A.
lately. Let me give you some examples.

I worked with two mothers last week who are having problems
with very colicky babies. Both babies are on the thin side
and both babies breastfeed for long periods. One mother who
has lactose intollerance herself says that she can eat dairy
when she takes lact-aid. When she takes her lact-aid and
eats dairy the baby doesn't react but if she skips the
lact-aid and eats dairy baby gets gassy, has green stools,
and is fussy. With the lact-aid none of these symptoms
appear. Does this make sense?

The other mother has a baby with what appear to be multiple
sensitivities (real or imagined). She has taken herself off
so many foods that I fear her nutritional status is in
danger. When she went off milk products the baby's flakey
skin improved and green stools stopped. Fussiness and a
baby who doesn't sleep continued.
What improvements that did occur came in 3 days.
This mother also has a major problem with filled milk
ducts. She has had repeated bouts with them and her doctors
are at a loss. The RN/lactation nurse who worked with her
prior to consulting me has had her using warm salt water
soaks. This hasn't helped much. The mother has been using
a sterilized needle to "pop" the milk blister. I suggested
lecithin and vitamin C. I also talked to her about diet and
referred her to a book outlining rotation diets in an
attempt to better balance her nutritional status.
    Any thoughts?
 Denise
