Dear Julie,

If there is blood mixed with mucous the likely diagnosis is colitis:
1) allergic colitis - food related - should be able to see eosinophils
(allergic white blood cells) when the mucous is examined microscopically
2) infectious colitis - viral or rarely bacterial (usually sick
kids)...very rare parasitic


If there is blood without mucous, the source is some type of open wound
near the anus:
1) fissure or hemorrhoid just above the anus, out of view
2) irritated cyst or hemangioma

A clotting disorder on top of these open wounds may contribute to
persistent bleeding.

With the problem lasting this long, it would be wise to recommend that
the baby be examined by a gastroenterologist.
