Pat-
I have been workingwith a LLLL who is planning to adopt a baby from China.
She has taught me many things that may be both helpful and of interest to
all of you lactnetters (which is why I am sharing it all publically).
Most babies (all girls by the way) are fed a rice based baby milk.
It is given to these little ones in a bottle with a VERY large hole in the
nipple. Therefore many of these babies need to be taught how to suck. I
think this is a very positive beginning for someone wishing to breastfeed.
The mom I am working with has been getting a number of friends to pump
breastmilk for her and she is planning to take it, packed in dry ice, with
her. The only glitch in the planning is that the babies are not released
and considered abandoned, which is a prerequisite to being adopted, until
they are at least 2 months old. The mom I'm working with hopes that won't
be a problem-the baby even may be 3-4 months old. I think that since she
has really not been sucking on a bottle, it might be ok. She is also
begining to pump now and we met and talked about alternative feeding methods
until her supply gets going and the baby begins to suck.
I won't be back in the office at all this week, and I would like to
check with the mother first, but I think , since she is LLL Leader, she not
be adverse to the idea of getting a phone call to talk about this with
"your"mom. Email me privately next week and I'll bring home her phone #.

Hi, Vera-nice to see you on the net!
