I am a visiting nurse in a maternal/childhealth program. I had to see a
mom/baby today for the first time. Baby is one month today, mom dropped him
while walking downstairs. He was seen in the ER, and social worker made the
referral to Visiting Nurse Service. She said she was bottlefeeding, but I
noticed a breast pump, so naturally I inquired about it. She said she tried
to pump but couldn't get any milk. After examining the baby, (he was fine, no
problem from the fall) I asked her if she would like to try to nurse him, she
looked at me like I was crazy. But she was willing, so we attempted to get
this one month old, never before breastfed infant, latched on. This kid
looked like he has been nursing since day one, after nursing well for about 5
minutes, he kind of looked up at her and smiled. The kid never let go,
proceeded to nurse for about 15 minutes, and then took the other breast. Both
mom and I were so pleased, and baby was smiling! I will continue to give her
phone support until I can get back to see her.
This definately made my day, until a SUV hit my car, and smashed up the
front!! I think I am ok, a bit shaky and sore.
Anyway, I was so pleased with how well this baby did, that I just had to
share it with my friends on Lactnet.
Car-less for the moment on Long Island.
