I have been reading with interest about the calm approach in waiting newborns to find the breast. Do those of you who work in hospitals have policies relating to this? What(how many minutes) is considered a "feeding". How many hours can an infant go without nursing? At what point is the infant fed ABM? Our nurses get quite nervous if an infant hasn't nursed 2 hours after being born. Our policy sates that if an infant hasn't nursed in 5 hours (after the initial feeding) a blood sugar has to be done, if it is over 40 you can wait another hour, but if the infant hasn't eaten in an hour, then formula is given.
For those who have more relaxed policies, on what studies are these based? Somehow in the world of evidence based research, normal newborn sleepy behavior isn't enough to convince the "powers that be" to wait it out before a baby has to be artificially fed.
