Dear Friends:

This poor mother...........thank goodness she is pumping.

I've worked with women with Sheehan's. There is no way to predict what will
happen. One mother I worked with that had a hemorrhage at 2 weeks postpartum
got 2 units of blood. She had already been nursing and lost her supply
completely. It took 3 weeks to get it back, 3 weeks of initially non-productive
pumping and a s l o w increase in volume. She was lucky and got it all back.

Sounds like that might be a possibility for this woman.

I suggest this mother double-pump with a hospital grade pump and get the
baby s2s as soon as she gets home. The baby will need support, and will need to
be fed either donor milk or formula while she is building her supply. Perhaps
a SNS would help her, get the baby to breast for the best stimulation.

Lots of s2s for this dyad to recover each other and help the mom to rest and
recover. Lots of visitors bearing iron-rich meals: homemade gingerbread
made with molasses, eggs (iron in the yolks), organ meats and beef (if she'll
eat them), dark green leafy vegetables, cook in cast iron cookware....and her
practitioner will probably give some supplemental iron also. Remember that
Vitamin C helps with iron absorption.

It can take a long time to recover from a hemorrhage.

warmly,
