Jaye said it best, I too learned this at a conference from a dermatologist.
The conference I learned it at was in Atlanta a few years ago. It was
presented by Emory Regional Perinatal Center, the 15th Annual Conference on
Breastfeeding. The speaker was Sylvia W. Wright, MD a Clinical dermatologist
in Atlanta Georgia.
Her recommendations included gently cleansing the nipple with a mild soap.
(not antibacterial) and air dry, avoid blow drying (then apply ointment).

We use baby shampoo since it is clean rinsing and non irritating, (it is
often used as a wash with saline to treat severe eye infections.) It is
inexpensive, many new parents in the US have it on hand and as luck would
have it, there are always plenty of small bottles of it at our hospital.

(by the way that was an excellent conference!)
