I spoke by phone today with a mother (PTP) whose 12-month-old has her
concerned. She says he is "99% breastfed" and rarely eats much solids
though she offers with the baby-led weaning approach. Baby nurses very
frequently, 30 seconds-15 minutes at a time at intervals of 10 minutes-2
hours (almost never longer). He also requests as much as 2 ounces of water
at a time when eating food. Due to the baby's apparent constant thirst, and
family history (2 and 3 generations back) of Type 1 diabetes, his blood
glucose was tested and turned out to be fairly low -- 65 mg/dL (~3.6
mmol/L).

Baby's 19-year-old sister has severe food allergies, so baby's lack of
interest in solids may not be surprising. His frequently soaked diapers
(sometimes 1 cloth/hour) would seem to indicate that thirst is not due to
sweating in the Oklahoma heat.

Please tell me, wise ones:
Based on this report, are you worried about this child?
What information about blood sugar issues at this age would you refer the
mother to? What, if any, sort of practitioner would you refer this family
to?

Thanks,
Ruth
