Hello, I spoke to my best friend a few days ago . The conversation added to
the discussion on this list still bothers me. she had a baby girl 5 weeks
ago. This is a baby number 4. The baby was born pre-term. The lungs did not
function properly and had to be inflated. Then she was on ventilator, got
pneumonia, got a punctured lung. The baby was a month old by the time she
was released from the hospital. She had almost no food by mouth. The feeding
tube was removed right before discharge. Insurance was not paying for any
additional hospital stay. They barely got the baby to except dribbling fluid
into her mouth (brestmilk). My friend has to go back to work next week. She
is pumping. Not because she likes it, but because there is no choice. Her
job is an economic necessity. let's remember mother's like this. she is not
alone. A few years ago another friend pumped for almost a year to provide
the milk for her daughter who was severely brain damaged during the
delivery. The milk was given through the feeding tube.
Nothing like this, but my youngest had a severe reflux and does not
enjoy nursing. It is extremely hard to nurse the baby, who does not like it.
I can see when someone might give up.
