In response to the thread about mothers who cannot tolerate putting their
babies to breast..... has anyone read about this being the result of
unresolved grief over child or pregnancy loss? It seems to me I have read
this, but I can't remember where. I had a client who nursed the first child
for 9 months, had a miscarriage and could not tolerate putting the second
baby to breast. She had nipple pain that could not be explained or fixed.
Then another miscarriage and again could not nurse the third baby beyond a
couple of weeks due to unexplained nipple pain. She had help from me long
distance via phone and her pediatrician who was also an IBCLC. It seems to
have something to do with resisting bonding with the baby after a loss.

Also, to Julie who hemorrhaged and is planning a hep lock for the next birth.
I had a hemorrhage with baby number 4 and was definitely frightened about
birth again, but there were no complications with number 5. Perhaps those
better schooled in birthing can attest, but I think my midwife said having a
previous hemorrhage is not a risk factor for it happening again.
