Hi from New Zealand,

I have just subscribed.

Waiting for my exam result.............

Am a Registered Nurse, work in a primary (Community owned Birthing Centre 4
beds, 60 births per year) facility, a tertiary (Hospital 3000 births per
year) facility and in a community breastfeeding clinic.

Trying at the moment to help a woman with over-supply.

I have checked the archives and read some useful posts from 1995, just want
to make sure I am up to date.

This is second time lactation for mum.

Forceful milk ejection reflex, copious milk leaking frequently throughout
the day.

Baby is four months old, and can cope with let down well on one breast but
not other.

Frequently comes off difficult side because of coughing and compensatory
tongue movements, however will drink without fuss on this side at night.

Baby is constantly sucking her fist and her stools are frequently green but
with some stools being yellow.

We have tried:

Using one breast at a time for four hours and have had some success
down-regulating the supply, however this did cause some lumps in the
difficult breast and a fever!! Off to the doctor for antibiotics, at this
time the difficult breast also developed a yellow pimple over the lumpy area
- it did not develop into a abscess.

The infection resolved and mum continues the 4hrly timeframe on each breast.

Mum has tried up-hill nursing but the baby employs compensatory tongue
movements and continually comes off.

Mum has tried letting down into a cloth this appears to make little
difference to the baby who seems to be fed up with this breast and refuses
it after only a short attempt of latching on and off - I am concerned about
a possible imminent nursing strike .

Apart from the ideas below is there anything else I should know about. I
have never tried any of the techniques mentioned below.

Using sage ie the 3-4 cups a day of sage tea

Taking Sudafed one tablet morning and night for one day

Embarking on a pumping regime for four days (as mentioned in over supply
archive from 1995)

Taking the combined birth control pill for seven days (Mum is currently
using LAM)

Many thanks

Claire Payn NZ
