Lisa,

What a comprehensive perspective on suck training and I agree wholeheartedly.
I find that most parents don't like to consider Early Intervention programs
that offer the therapies and those that do continue to suffer with infant's
suck problems for weeks while EI gets set up. Thorough instruction with
rationale, demo and return demo with ongoing evaluation is imperative. I'm often
dismayed that some hospitals who teach parents to finger feed don't include
written instructions nor obtain informed consent for use of alternative feeding
methods, which in my opinion should include bottles, especially when one sees
baby struggling with fast flow and finishing that 3-4 oz in 5 min.

I agree Lisa, that written guidelines for LC's with standardized procedure
for use, including rationale, would be most helpful. We all experience the
frustration, as do the moms, when moms are taught things one way and you then have
to diplomatically and carefully re-educate them.

Barbara Latterner, BSN, RN, IBCLC (who has learned so much in this area from
one of the best.)
