Thought that you all might be interested in this very exciting
development. I write frequently for Minnesota Parent Magazine and I
happen to know that the editor, Jeannie Ouellette-Howitz, worked very
hard to convince the publishers to implement this new policy. She is to
be commended. They also published my article on the risks of artificial
feeding a few months ago:

Letters to the editor congratulating Minnesota Parent on its new policy

Minnesota Parent Magazine Becomes Second in Nation to Comply with WHO
Code

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT:Soma D. Jurgensen
February 10, 1998 612-372-3756

After a thorough study of the World Health Organization’s International
Code of Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes (WHO Code), Minnesota
Parent is proud to announce its voluntary compliance with the rules and
regulations set forth by the code. Effective immediately, Minnesota
Parent will refrain from accepting the advertising or marketing of
breast milk substitutes. Minnesota Parent is one of only two parenting
publications in the nation known to comply with the Code—and is the
first to do so in eighteen years.

Only sixteen countries around the world fully enforce the WHO Code,
which prohibits the marketing and promotion of breast milk substitutes
to the public. Although the United States has backed the Code since
1994, our federal and state governments have yet to establish
legislation to enforce its guidelines.

Minnesota Parent’s support of the WHO Code reflects our respect for the
research and expertise of the world’s leading health professionals, and
our mission as a publication devoted to enriching and supporting
parents, children, and families.

For more information about the WHO Code, visit the World Health
Organization’s website at HYPERLINK http://www.who.ch/ www.who.ch/

With an audited circulation of 65,000, Minnesota Parent is the leading
resource for Twin Cities families. Every month Minnesota Parent covers
family news and issues such as health, education, and family dynamics.
Minnesota Parent also offers parents and kids a complete calendar of
family entertainment and events.
