This is not only an Australian issue. We have the same. The Dutch law did not
fully implement the Code, so manufacturers have found many ways to advertise
in such a way that they follow the letter of the law, but not the spirit.
It is very subbtle. For instance the cards midwifes use for appointments are
a gift of either 1 of the two leading formula brands. It carries the name of
the brand and a slogan, Friesland for example carries: Friesland, the
children's food specialist and a cute little blue bear. Everyone knows the
slogan and the bear and everyone knows they are the biggest after Numico in
formula. And besides that both manufacturers have tons of booklets
advertising (in advertorials) the special formula's (extra energy, for babies
who spit, etc.). Dutch law did not include those so they focus on marketing
for babies with special needs, reading some thing like "We all know that
breast is best, but some babies seem always hungry and could use some extra
energy"
It would be interesting to know how this is in other countries and if someone
has found a solution.

Warmly greeting,

Gonneke
