Anna says:" We rarely see anyone the first 24 hours after birth (it is the
nurses
who get the mothers started and give the initial teaching)".

Actually, isn't this a big part of the job of the hospital LC--to be sure
that the nursing staff is "up to speed" so that the basic teaching &
assessment can be done on all 3 shifts. Then the LC is available for
troubleshooting, collaborating, educating, policy-making and maybe even some
research (wishful thinking, I know, but I am looking ahead to the ideal
world!). In my hospital, there are several really great nurses who really
help these moms; then there are the ones who "save" all of the BF education
and assessment for the LC's; when we come on duty, their first words are "oh
good, the mom in room xxx could really use your help". Of course, we usually
find a mom trying to awaken a sleepy baby b/c it is "time" to feed him!!!
UGH!! Great teaching opportunity,though.
