Jan (who is claiming to be the Larger Barger but I wouldn't be so sure about
that!) says (re: older moms/milk production): "If this isn't routinely part
of history taking, and if it isn't something that is watched as part of the
lactation progress, perhaps it should be."

Yes! And then we might actually *know* more about the question, instead of
just speculating in silence and feeling like "gee, I know I shouldn't even
think this, but I wonder if...".

When we "know" something that *may* be detrimental to full milk production
(like, for example, the concerns about supply posed by breast reduction
surgery), I'm sure that we don't say "Oh, you had a breast reduction when
you were 18? Well, don't count on being able to make enough milk to feed
your baby, better plan on supplementing, or maybe just forget the whole
idea." Because we know that that's not the whole story, and that we don't
really know what *this* woman, *this* baby will do, we support her all the
way, we share with her whatever we know that will optimize her success, and
we keep that extra-alert eye we all have open to see what is to be seen. I
don't think that that is "planting a seed of doubt" - in fact, I'm sure it
isn't!

Cathy Bargar RN IBCLC IThaca NY (where we are finally getting some snow &
cold - and I'm sick and NOT going out to shovel! Just waiting for those
strapping young people to come to the door, so I can wave some dollars in
their faces and say, "yes, I'd love you to shovel my walk!")
